Back to Tutorials

In this tutorial i will be using the Motocross Madness 2 and Adobe Photoshop 6.0

Step 1
Setting yourself up

Step 1 Part 1

ok there are many ways to set up your folders for your tracks

this is how i do it
1st I have 1 folder that i put all my tracks in
when i go to make a new track i just make a new folder in that folder
i call that folder "tracks from books" it isn't important why but i do
so just make a folder for your tracks name what you want

2nd
when you have created a new folder where you can put all your tracks
you can make a new folder in that folder name it what you like
so you can remember what is in that folder
i usually name my new tracks i have no name for "NewTrack"
then i change it when i think of a name for it

3rd
Put your disp, Tex, and any other creation files you have created
like your .max file for rendering your tex or whatever you want in that folder
if you don't have these files made just save the files here when you make them

4th
before you save your project in the armadillo
make a folder inside your "NewTrack" folder
i call this new folder "Project" because i will be saving my project there
in order to keep my files separated :)

5th
now just save your .prj file in the Project folder

Here is an example of what i mean
the Assistant folder is created from the Multi Object Assistant
cause i have some custom objects on this track
so don't worry about that
Ccsx stands for Crazy Cat Sx

Here is a pic of my Project file

this shows you both of the Files you need to edit or overwrite

you must save your project file to see these files
i have Bundled this project already
and when you do what you end up with more files
also i got some Multi Object Assistant files and folders that you might not have

Step 2
Taking the picture

Step 2 Part 1

ok i suppose you want to know how to take a picture of your track
ok what i do is
go into Motocross Madness 2
go to your track
go in Practice mode with 0 opponents

then i go to an area and move the camera around until i get a good view
to move the camera use the number pad on the keyboard

see here on this picture
way to the right is the number pad

the 8 moves the camera Up
2 Down
6 Right
4 Left
the 5 key changes the camera u don't really need this one for taking pictures
but you may want to use it while your riding :)
The Plus and Minus keys are to zoom in and out

to turn off the stuff the keys are...

F4

Turns off/on that yellow arrow on the track
and the green arrow that follows your guy

F5

Turns off/on the Stats
(what place your in, lap times)

F6

Turns off/on the Radar
the thing that shows you the layout of the track (really the spline)

F7

Turns off/on your Speedometer

Now to take the picture
Hold down the ALT key
press Print Screen (it is above insert, next to Scroll Lock)

What that does is copy it just like any other thing you copy like when you copy and paste words
this is just copying and pasting a picture of your screen

ok now the size of the picture will depend on
the resolution that you chose to run your game in

i end up with pretty big pictures :

Step 3
Making the Picture

Step 3 Part 1

first Open your Paint program (Paint Shop Pro, or Adobe Photoshop)

in photoshop go to File > New (Ctrl + N)
then go to Edit > Paste (Ctrl + V)

now if your picture doesn't fit in your new image it is understandable don't panic
all you have to do is close that image and go to File > New again

now when you Paste your image it will be the right size

Step 3 Part 2

ok now that you have your photo i suggest
making it the right size before you add any text

there are 2 main ways i resize my image
the one way is better cause the image will look better and not distorted
and the other way is better cause you can fit more in the image
so it depends on if you want to show more of the track or not

ok i will show you the way that makes it not distorted

1st choose the Marquee tool (M)
make sure it is on Rectangle and not oval
to change it push Shift + M

now go to the options for the marquee in Photoshop 6.0 they are at the top in 5.5
it is in one of the palettes the tab says options

now what you do is choose Constrained Aspect Ratio
type in 452 x 220
for the width and height

now that you have done this try to select a area of your image
you see the marquee will not exactly follow your cursor
don't think your computer is slow that is what it is supposed to do

now deselect that and select what you want in your picture
and go to Image > Crop

now that you cropped it just go to Image > Image Size
type in 452 x 220

now your picture is the correct size
and you can add in your text
the text tool shortcut is ( T )

Step 3 Part 3

Now i will show you the other way to make pictures

select the Marquee tool (m)
Make sure the Style is Normal and NOT Constrained Aspect Ratio

select the area you want to be shown in the game
go to Image > Crop
Go to Image > Image Size
Type in 452 x 220
and add text with the Text tool ( T )

Step 4
Saving the picture

Step 4 Part 1

ok now that you have that image you must save it

in your Project folder you will see 2 .tga files
one has the same name as your track
and the other does too but... it has a S at the end of it

the S i think stands for Small
this will help you to find out which image to save where

ok so you have a 452 x 220 image now
Overwrite the .tga WITHOUT the S with this file
MAKE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A 16-bit .tga!

now after that is saved go to
Image > Image Size and type in 286 width -- 139 height
now overwrite the .tga WITH the S with this file
MAKE SURE TO SAVE IT AS 16-bit .tga!

once the Armadillo creates this image it doesn't overwrite it
so you do not have to keep saving these .tga's

ok now what you need to do is make the picture work in the GAME :)

to do this you must open the Armadillo
Open your project
go to File and Save if necessary
when you bundle your project it sends the .env file to the correct file for the game
and the .env is your track and when you push bundle it adds your New picture to the .ENV file
so when you push bundle it puts your picture in the game

and that is it :)
