Back to Steps 1-3

Step 4
Getting Ready To Add Jumps

Step 4 Part 1

First Select the path by
Holding down Ctrl and clicking on the Path layer
Path Layer
now invert the selection by pushing Ctrl + Shift + I

Now that you have done that
Right click on the selection with the Marquee tool (M)
and select Layer via Cut

Layer Via Cut

Now You should have 4 layers
Delete the layer that looks like the path but is left over from the Cut
it is Called Background
Now you have 3 layers
Name the new layer you cut, Grass

It should look like this
My layers so far

Now that you have done this Gaussian Blur the Grass layer
i blurred it at a 2 pixel radius
This will be how much your jumps will be blurred on the edges

Now you are ready to add jumps :)

Step 5
Adding Jumps/Whoops

Step 5 Part 1 (Jumps)
There are a few techniques for making jumps i will show you two of them
Using the Gradient Tool AND Using the Airbrush tool

Note: Before you place jumps make sure to Add a layer called Jumps
Above the path and below the Grass

Gradient

Airbrush
First you have to select an area
where you want your jump to be
i am going to make a little jump
so i made the selection Short
Rectangular Selection for my Jump
This is the way i use most i think i get more control when using this technique

First you have to figure out how steep you want your jump to be To determine this there are two ways to do this One way is to change the size of the brush The other way i will show you down there

1. In Photoshop 6.0 First click on the Airbrush Tool or push (a)
In Photoshop 7.0 Click the Brush Tool Brush Toolor push (b)
then just go under the Menus and click this Airbrush Tool to get the Airbrush

To change the brush size Click on the box next to the little Down arrow and change the Diameter i made it 5px it will be pretty steep
Make Hardness 0%
Brush Options
Note: In Photoshop 7.0 just right click somewhere on your disp map and a menu will pop up so you can change the size

2. Now to make the jump
First i made my color selector the same height (Color) as where i was going to make the jump next with the EyeDropper or when u have the Airbrush Tool u can Hold down Alt That will bring up the Eyedropper tool for as long as you have that held down and you can click on the place where you are going to make the jump
Colors
now click the box that is highlighted in red (Not on your computer only in that picture)
and a new window opens up and now you can click on the radio selector next to B for Brightness and move that up and down or you can change the RGB numbers but you should keep the RBG numbers all the same so it is gray
Adobe Color Picker

3.Now all you have to do is put the jump in there some people make only one line but i like to make a bunch of strokes at different heights like this
my jump
I took out the path and the Background so you could see it better so ignore the White stuff

some of those lines don't reach all the way across as you can see the reason for that is the terrain under that jump isn't even or flat so if i were to take the shorter colors and move them all the way across it would create a hole and you don't want that in front of your jump

A good way to make your jumps is to use the heights it takes a little math:
I if your base ground is
0 - 0 - 0 and you start off with a brush color of 5 - 5 - 5 then you go to
15 - 15 - 15 and then you go to
45- 45- 45 it wont be very steep but you will have a very small kicker
Remember the steepness of your jump also depends on the size of your brush

If you were to start off with
5 - 5 - 5 and go to
30 - 30 - 30 then go to
80 - 80 - 80 you would have a steep jump and tall too

Think of it like this
think how much you are going up like
5 to 30 is 25 up or
30 - 5 = 25

so you shouldn't go to 45 after you go from 5 to 30
cause that would only by 15 (45 - 30 = 15) up and you just went up 25 so you would actually be going down 10 (25 - 15 = 10) and you would have a bump in the middle of your jump
you should keep going up at the rate you started at or you can make it bigger like
up 5 then up 45 then up 90 et cetera.

4.Well now that you have a Jump you need to blur it you need it smoother
I usually use Motion blur and some Gaussian but I think it is better to use gaussian for nationals so go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian blur
i will use a radius of 3.0
you can use whatever you want depending on your jump

Here is my jump .
My Jump
now that you have all this done go try it out in the editor
Click This to figure out how
Testing The Displacement Map
In this technique the Gradient tool is used in
shortcut "g"
if you hold Shift push "g"
you can get to the gaussian tool in Photoshop 6.0
it looks like this Gradient Tool
Now all you have to do is set what you
want your jump to look like

In Photoshop 6.0 and 7.0 Double click on the gradient it looks like this Gradient

If your using Photoshop 5.5 click the Edit button Next to the gradient
Edit the Gradient
Below you can see the Gradient editor
this pops up when you Double click the Gradient.

Adobe Gradient Editor
1. Now u can edit the jump(s), my jump is on a hill so i selected the first Mover Thingy and clicked the beginning of my selection (The First thing I did at the beginning of this Gradient section)
i clicked the beginning of my selection with the eyedropper that shows up when you have the mouse over your dispmap
doing this will make it the same height so the beginning of the jump with the at the same height as the terrain before the jump

2 .Then i clicked the other mover thingy at the end
and clicked the end of my selection to make that the same height
where my jump will end

3. Now i add another mover thingy by clicking in an open space between the 2 movers when the arrow turns to a hand
my terrain was 131 - 131 - 131 (RGB) so on my new mover i made it 175 - 175 - 175 by double clicking the Color box

so it will be a pretty small jump if i make the displacement strength 40.0 in the Armadillo Track Editor

5. now i have one of the movers selected and
between that mover and the one next to it is a little Diamond
i moved it closer to the top of my jump in the center to make my jump steeper
Now push OK and you are back to the disp map
now with the little + thingy which shows up for the Gradient tool
Move it in the angle you want your jump to be
Now do the same for your landing mound :)

If you selected your jump with the Marquee tool and
your selection is a rectangle you can hold down Shift
when you are moving the + for the gradient tool
this will make your jump perfectly straight No Angles
Double on a hill
That is what my jump turned out to look like .
This comes out to be a little double on top of a hill
you see the LEFT of the jump is about the same height or higher than the jump and the RIGHT of the jump the ground is about the same height as the bottom of the jump

Step 5 Part 2 (Whoops)

Adding Whoops

To add whoops there are 2 different ways i will show you to do this just like the Jumps

1. For the Gradient way just do exactly what you did for jumps
But make the jump smaller and make a bunch of them closer together
Like this
Gradient For my Whoops

2.
Now for Whoops with a Airbrush all you do is choose a
color that is about 10-30 above what you ground is

Note: Use this if your Displacement strength is 40.0 in the Armadillo
if you don't know what that means just do what this says

So if your ground is 90 - 90 - 90
then make your whoops 100 - 100 - 100
For 10 above
all depends on how high you want them to be and
what number you put in for the Displacement Strength in the Dillo

Here is my Finished Displacement Map
i added Much more jumps and some whoops but is it hard to tell that the whoops are there

My Finished Displacement Map

Here is what my Layers look like

My Layers

ONE MORE THING
i forgot to mention
for the path if you have the layers set up like this
you can make the path all 0 - 0 - 0 :) or
whatever color your Path was
Just be sure to leave it at 7% opacity or
whatever you chose
