Making Textures Using .PSD Displacement Map

Click on these to go Directly to that Step

Back to Tutorials

In this tutorial i will be using Adobe® Photoshop® 6.0

Step 1
Getting ready to make Textures

Step 1 Part 1

Open Adobe Photoshop

Open you Displacement map you have created using Layers

I have shown you how in Making A National Displacement Map &
Making a Supercross Displacement Map

Now that you have opened that go to Image > Image Size
a window will pop up for you to type in a size
it should say 514x514 right now we are going to change that to the size that the Armadillo wants it at 960x960

MAKE SURE before you go on any further to go to File > Save As
and save it as something other than what it is called now cause if you don't you won't have your displacement map anymore

ok before we go on to the next step you should delete your Path Layer
If you made a Displacement map the way the Tutorial showed you
on making Displacement Maps you will have this layer

Also Merge the Background and Jumps Layer
to do this i will show you how to Merge all Visible layers by using a function of Photoshop called Merge Visible

to do this select one of the layers you want to merge and click the Eye so you cannot see the Grass layer cause you don't want that to merge

now all you do is go to the Layer Menu and at the bottom you will see
Merge Visible (Shift+ Ctrl + E)

Now your layers should look like this

Step 2
Creating The Dirt

Step 2 Part 1

Now what you must do is make the Textures

First Start off with making the Dirt

To do this you create a New layer
Above your Background and Below the Grass

Go to the Layer > New > New layer (Shift + Ctrl + N)
Name this layer Dirt (This will be your Dirt)

ok now what you do is go to the Colors on the Tool bar
and select the color marked here in red (the top left one)

Ok now a window will pop up where you can select the color of your dirt
Between Red and yellow is Dirt looking

i will use a little more yellow for this track i want it to be Lighter

Now all you do is Fill in your Dirt layer with the color you chose

Now you can see that this isn't very dirt looking cause it is all the same color throughout

there is many different techniques and combinations of stuff you can do to make this look more natural looking
i will show you one good way is to go to this

ok first you take your Dirt layer go to Filter > Noise > Add Noise
then just fumble around with that for a while
till you get something that looks like very flat dirt

Something like this

now that you have that you need to Duplicate that layer
right click on the layer and go to Duplicate Layer
Name it whatever you please

now just go to Filter > Artistic > WaterColor
i take the Brush Detail up to 14
Shadow Intensity to 0 and
Texture to 1

Here is mine

Trick: Here is a little trick i know if this stuff gets to intense try this
after you add a filter and you don't like how it came out you can adjust the opacity of
the filter all you do is when you add the filter just undo (CTRL + Z) the filter then go to
Edit > Fade
(CTRL + SHIFT + F) this is a very useful tool

now your dirt should look a little weird
this layer you have just Watercolored should be above your other dirt layer
now change the opacity of this layer you have just Watercolored to around 15 - 20%

You can do this a few times with other Filters and different layer at that opacity and also try fooling with
the Blend mode it is that drop down menu that says Normal

Ok now that you have all this
you want to know how to put in
those darker regions you see on other tracks

You see it is like that dark path that goes around the track

One way i do this is to make a New layer above all of your dirt layers
and Just Select where you want to make the dark region with the Lasso Tool
(I use the Polygonal Lasso Tool )
then when ya got that selected go to Select > Feather (Ctrl +Alt + D)
Feather it about 10 - 30 Pixels

and then just choose a color that is darker or lighter than your dirt and fill it in (On the New Layer)
to change the color of these regions just go to Image > Adjust > Hue/Saturation (Ctrl + U)
and adjust that around to get the desired color
that is so you don't have to keep selecting the color and filling

Make this layer Opacity at most like 50 or so depending on what you like

Now that you are done makeing the Dirt it is time to make the Grass
you can do pretty much everything you did to make the Dirt the same just use a different color (Greenish)

Step 3
Adding Ruts

Step 3 Part 1

Adding ruts to you track can be done Before or After you Render your Textures
I like to do it after but i will tell you how i do it if i were to do it before i rendered it

First what i do is Select the Burn Tool (o)
and select what range i want to burn
Shadows, Midtones, or Highlights
i think all of these are good for makeing ruts
A mix between Shadows and Midtones is what i usually use
i am using a brush size of 2
and Exposure is set to 20%

Now just make your Dirt layer's Opacity about 30 - 40% so you can see the Displacement behind it
now you can see where your jumps are on the displacement map
and will be able to tell where to stop making ruts
make sure the Dirt layer is selected

If you used many layers just take the Layer that has the highest opacity or
just merge all your dirt layers together that is the best way i think

now all you have to do is think that you are riding on the track
and think what lines you would take or did take when you were Testing The Displacement Map

Just burn where ever you think you would make ruts in real life
You may have to go over one turn many times for all the different lines
you could have 100 ruts in one turn some overlaying others
